Former President Martin Vizcarra was released from
Barbadillo Prison in Lima's Ate district on Thursday afternoon, in compliance with a court order that overturned the five-month preventive detention imposed on him in the Lomas de Ilo-Moquegua Hospital case.
Upon leaving the penitentiary center, Vizcarra was greeted by supporters of Peru Primero (Peru First Party), the political organization he is affiliated with.
Vizcarra faces criminal proceedings for the alleged offense of passive bribery, accused of receiving bribes in exchange for awarding contracts for the Lomas de Ilo and Moquegua Hospital projects, during his tenure as governor of that region (2011–2014).
As is known, Vizcarra was President of the Republic from March 23, 2018, to November 9, 2020, the day on which he was impeached and removed from office by Congress.
