2026 Elections: OAS observers to be present in all Peruvian regions

00:00 | Lima, Apr. 10.

The Organization of American States (OAS) Electoral Observation Mission Chief Victor Rico reported that observers from the multilateral organization will be present during election day in 24 Peruvian regions, as well as in the Constitutional Province of Callao.

Rico stated that the OAS mission is composed of 97 observers representing 22 countries of the Americas, who will verify the proper conduct of the April 12 General Elections.

Likewise, the official indicated that observers from the organization will be present in selected cities abroad where Peruvians residing overseas will cast their votes.

"At the beginning of this month, we began deploying the OAS Electoral Observation Mission, which totals 97 observers representing 22 countries from our hemisphere," he told the National Elections Board (JNE) TV station.

Installation of polling tables

The mission chief indicated that during the general elections to be held this Sunday nationwide, as well as in countries where Peruvians reside, observers will visit polling places to verify the electoral process from the moment polling tables are installed.

"We will be present throughout the day filling out a form on aspects that are important to us, in order to later present our preliminary report and subsequently our final report to the OAS Permanent Council," said Rico, a Bolivian national.

Separately, the OAS Electoral Observation Mission head met on Thursday with National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) Chief Piero Corvetto to review the progress made by the electoral body ahead of Sunday's vote.

The General Elections will be held on April 12, 2026, with a potential runoff for the presidential race scheduled for June 7 of the same year.

This electoral process will allow citizens to go to the polls to choose the next President of the Republic, Vice Presidents, Senators, Deputies, and Representatives to the Andean Parliament.

More than 27.3 million Peruvians will be eligible to elect their new authorities.
