Peru has expressed its serious concern over the attack carried out recently on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) facilities, which caused injuries and material damage.

The Peruvian Foreign Affairs Ministry reported that the Government has been able to learn that a Peruvian Army non-commissioned officer deployed in UNIFIL is safe and remains at the headquarters along with the majority of UNIFIL personnel.

"Peru resolutely joins the call of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UNIFIL to ensure the safety of United Nations personnel and property, reiterating that any deliberate attack against peacekeepers constitutes a serious and unacceptable violation of international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution 1701," reads the communiqué released on Thursday evening.

Peru also reiterated its call for an end to the escalation of violence in the Middle East and for a negotiated solution to be reached within the framework of absolute respect for international law.
