The European Union (EU) Election Observation Mission (EOM) deployed to Peru has already begun its official activities after arriving in the country on February 26 to monitor the development of the General Elections scheduled for April 12, 2026.

The mission's core team met with National Elections Board (JNE) Chairman Roberto Burneo and with other representatives of the electoral institution, the EOM reported via social media.

"This first meeting aimed to be briefed on the details of the preparations for the 2026 General Elections in Peru," it indicated.

Likewise, analysts from the mission's core team met with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) representatives, who shared information about the technical assistance project provided to electoral management bodies.

They also held a meeting with the organization Transparencia Peru to receive information on the electoral observation project the civil association is working on for the elections.

In addition, the mission's Deputy Chief Observer, Alexander Gray, met with the head of the Directorate General for Multilateral and Global Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Meanwhile, the mission's Chief Observer, Italian Member of the European Parliament Annalisa Corrado, will arrive in Peru on March 15.

"It is a privilege to lead the Election Observation Mission in Peru, a responsibility I will fulfill with great care and respect. The upcoming elections have the potential to promote political stability and strengthen the democratic tradition in Peru," Corrado said after her appointment was confirmed.

The chief observer will be supported by 10 electoral experts who will remain in the country throughout the entire process, including the possible presidential runoff scheduled for next June.

The mission will also be reinforced by short- and long-term observers nationwide. At the end of its work, the group will issue a preliminary statement and present its initial conclusions two days after election day.

Once the electoral process has concluded, Corrado will return to Peru to present a final report to authorities with recommendations to enhance the integrity and effectiveness of future elections and democratization in general.

As is known, Peru's General Elections will be held on April 12 to elect national authorities for the 2026–2031 term, including the Presidency of the Republic and two Vice Presidencies, a 130-deputy Congress, a 60-member Senate, and five representatives to the Andean Parliament.

If no presidential candidate obtains half plus one of the votes, a runoff will be held on June 7 between the two presidential contenders with the highest number of valid votes.
