A strong explosion was registered this morning at Ubinas Volcano —located in southern Sanchez Cerro province, Moquegua region— which put authorities and locals on alert.

The event occurred at 7:47 a.m. (local time) and was followed by a column of ash that reached over 3,500 meters above the mountain's crater.

This information was confirmed by the Geological, Mining, and Metallurgical Institute (Ingemmet), which stated that the ash cloud drifted towards the northeastern flank of the volcano, thus affecting the towns of Yalagua, Exchaje, Yunga, Lloque, and Tassa.

Before this explosion, the ash and gases emitted by Ubinas had affected the towns located in the southern and southeastern flanks of the volcano, such as the districts of Ubinas, Matalaque, the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) reported.

Afterwards, due to the wind, the ash cloud moved towards the east and northeast, thereby affecting the towns of Yalagua, Lloque, and San Juan de Tarucani.

In the face of the ash fall, the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) recommends avoiding exposure to it, by protecting the eyes with special glasses, wearing face masks, as well as covering water and food containers.
