Peru's President: Cabinet guarantees public safety and free elections

10:25 | Lima, Mar. 18.

The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, on Wednesday reaffirmed the suitability of the Cabinet led by Luis Arroyo Sanchez, stating that priority is being given to citizen security and the 2026 General Elections.

"Peru must be confident that this team that has been formed is a qualified team," the top official stated in an interview with RPP Noticias.

The Head of State said this country currently expects the government to confront crime with an appropriate strategy that delivers results, as well as to ensure free and transparent elections so that the transfer of power can take place next July.

Regarding the elections, the top official emphasized that all necessary resources have been provided to the electoral system bodies for that purpose.

"We are guaranteeing the highest level of transparency for the elections, which is a key and decisive factor, but those elections depend on there being a climate of calm rather than anxiety for voters who must go to the polls," Balcazar said.

On the fight against insecurity, the President underscored that the Peruvian National Police has the intelligence capabilities to tackle this problem.

He added that law enforcement will rely on technology to combat crimes such as extortion, with the aim of staying ahead of criminal activity.

"What we want is for there to be direction from the Premiership so that the Interior and Defense ministers get to work on what they know perfectly well. It seems to me that we are on the right track," he pointed out.

Asked whether changes will be made to the National Police, President Jose Maria Balcazar said this will depend on the Cabinet Chief, Luis Arroyo, who is expected to present his work plan between today and tomorrow.

The Head of State also mentioned that Denisse Miralles' departure from the post of Prime Minister took place within the framework of the Constitution.

He added that the reason for this replacement was the emphasis the government seeks to place on the fight against insecurity.

Unblocking stalled projects

At another point, the President announced that a supreme decree is to be issued today or tomorrow to advance "a first batch of projects" that are currently stalled, with the aim of ensuring their implementation and completion by next July.

The Head of State noted that among those projects is the construction of infrastructure such as dams, aimed at preventing flooding during the rainy season and addressing a social demand.

"Those structural problems must be resolved," he pointed out.

The President also said he will continue traveling to address the country's problems.

In this regard, the Head of State noted that he was recently in the city of Jaen, where a strike by ronderos (farming patrols) had been announced.

The top official added that he held talks with them and agreed to provide machinery for the construction of a road they had been demanding.

Separately, the President said his administration respects the decision of the Chilean government, led by President Jose Antonio Kast, to build a wall on the border with Peru and ruled out that it could create any problems in diplomatic relations.

"The Foreign Affairs Minister (Hugo de Zela) attended the transfer of power in Chile, and President (Kast) has shown him that he wants to maintain the best relations with me," Balcazar indicated.
