According to the Judiciary, Rodriguez Diaz is under investigation for the kidnapping and subsequent murder of 13 mine workers in the town of Pataz.
Alias "Cuchillo" was arrested on May 15 in Colombia during a joint operation between the Peruvian National Police (PNP) and Colombian authorities.
He had fled Peru after being identified as one of those responsible for planning and directing the mass killing of workers in Pataz, where they served as security personnel in mine shafts and tunnels.
On May 4, the mass killing of 13 mine workers who had been kidnapped by criminals linked to illegal mining was revealed.
The discovery of the bodies was led by a police rescue team that recovered the remains of the 13 workers who were kidnapped by illegal miners in collusion with criminal elements.
According to the investigation, the kidnapping took place on April 26, following an attack on the operations of an artisanal miner in formalization process, with whom Poderosa has a mining contract. A group of the miner’s workers was kidnapped during the incident, the mining company reported.
After the heinous crime, the government ordered the Armed Forces to take control of the area, among other measures. More than a thousand members of the National Police and the Armed Forces were deployed to Pataz.
Regarding the matter, ex-Interior Minister Julio Diaz Zulueta reported that the investigation into the murder of 13 people in a mine in Pataz district, La Libertad region, was at an advanced stage, with evidence pointing to the involvement of criminal organizations linked to illegal mining.
