The Forest Program of the Ministry of the Environment (Minam) has signed a letter of understanding with the firms A2G Sostenibilidad y Cambio Climático and Paskay to explore new revenue streams and market opportunities for native communities and small-scale producers involved in forest conservation.

This collaboration aims to evaluate a potential next step for communities already conserving their territories: the development of carbon projects.

Such initiatives could enable these communities to generate additional income by preventing deforestation, thereby reducing the release of gases that contribute to global warming.

Trees store carbon, which can be released when forests are destroyed. A carbon project must demonstrate the extent to which such releases have been avoided as a result of its interventions.

If the outcomes are verified and meet the necessary requirements, carbon credits can be generated and sold to companies or other buyers. These sales would provide income for the communities.

The letter, signed during ExpoAmazónica Ucayali 2026, will facilitate an assessment of the feasibility of developing such projects.

Jorge Luis Sáenz Rabanal, Executive Coordinator of the Forest Program, highlighted that this collaboration seeks to expand opportunities for these communities and explore alternatives that provide value both to their products and to their contributions toward conservation.

Conservation and New Opportunities

The assessment will encompass communities that benefit from the Conditional Direct Transfers (TDC) mechanism, business plans under the Forest Investment Program in Peru (FIP Peru), and other interventions led by the Forest Program.

The objective is to identify opportunities for carbon projects to complement the communities' existing economic activities. Furthermore, plans are in place to review the methodologies used to measure conservation outcomes and to propose improvements to Geobosques—a platform that provides satellite-based information on changes in forest cover.

Another area of focus will be assessing the carbon footprint of one or two products from businesses supported by FIP Peru; in other words, determining the emissions generated by their production.

This will help identify opportunities for improvement and commercial differentiation. Additionally, the requirements for accessing markets that demand deforestation-free products will be evaluated.

A2G will contribute its expertise in sustainability and climate management, while Paskay will provide its knowledge regarding carbon markets and forestry initiatives.

The Forest Program (Programa Bosques) will coordinate these efforts within the scope of its mandate, with the goal of linking conservation to new development opportunities.
