The decision was made during the Council of Ministers' regular session led by the Head of State at Government Palace in Lima on Wednesday.
"The visit of His Holiness is great news for the entire country," the Head of State expressed.
The initiative —proposed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs— will make it possible to take the necessary measures to ensure the proper organization of the papal visit, including customs facilities for the entry of the goods, equipment, and other items required during his stay in the South American country.
Likewise, a High-Level Extraordinary Commission will be established to set the guidelines, strategies, and actions aimed at ensuring the proper conduct of the visit.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be in charge of national coordination and will oversee the technical secretariat.
The ministries will appoint their representatives to this body, which may also include the relevant regional and local governments, depending on the cities and activities included in Pope Leo XIV's itinerary.
Once the visit concludes, the commission will have 30 days to submit a report on the actions carried out and the results achieved.
Projected attendance
According to estimates presented during the session, Pope Leo XIV's presence is expected to draw at least 700,000 people across the country.
Approximately 350,000 people are expected to participate in Lima; between 100,000 and 150,000 in Cusco; and around 75,000 each in Pucallpa and Chiclayo.
During the regular session, various matters of national interest were discussed, including measures to address damage caused by seismic activity and actions aimed at mitigating risks posed by droughts and water shortages associated with El Niño phenomenon in 2026–2027.
Economic and budgetary matters were also reviewed, along with draft regulations and other measures proposed by various sectors of the Executive Branch as part of the Government's work agenda.
