Peru: Authorities coordinate, carry out response actions following strong Ica earthquake

The National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci), through the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN), reported on the immediate response actions following the 6.1-magnitude earthquake registered in Ica region on Tuesday.

According to the Ministry of Defense (Mindef), no fatalities were reported after a strong earthquake, but at least 27 people suffered minor injuries.

The Ministry of Education (Minedu) reported damage at four educational institutions in Ica, including schools No. 22533, 22570, Horacio Zeballos, and 327.

In response, the government agency ordered the preventive isolation of affected areas, the implementation of the Education Sector Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (EDANSE), as well as coordination efforts to ensure the continuity of educational services in safe spaces.

It also reported damage to the Technological University of Peru (UTP) campus infrastructure in Ica, for which a corresponding technical assessment was recommended.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC) reported traffic restrictions at kilometer 41+000 of Los Libertadores Highway, along the San Clemente–Huaytara section, due to a landslide.

Concessionaire Covicentro is coordinating emergency response efforts and traffic flow restoration. 

The Ministry of Health (Minsa), through Health COES, has so far confirmed a total of 28 injured people, who were treated at Santa Maria del Socorro Hospital (13), Ica Regional Hospital, and San Jose de Chincha Hospital (2).

Furthermore, it reported two affected but operational Health Services Providing Institutions (IPRESS): Ica Regional Hospital and Pichuta Health Post in Huancavelica, as well as an affected but operational administrative office belonging to Ica Regional Health Directorate (Diresa).

Similarly, authorities reported that the General Directorate for Disaster Risk Management and Defense (DIGERD) will deploy personnel this Wednesday to provide support and specialized technical assistance.

At the same time, the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis) activated safety protocols and preventive evacuation measures at 112 Comprehensive Child Care Centers (CIAI) under the Ica Territorial Unit.

No damage to users or facility infrastructure was reported. Midis is also continuing monitoring efforts to identify possible impacts on social programs.

Finally, the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci), through the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN), is coordinating with regional and local authorities, monitoring the situation, and urging Emergency Operations Centers to remain active.
