At the conclusion of the meeting, the high-ranking official reported that a record 309,550 Peruvians residing abroad cast their ballots in the presidential runoff election on June 7.
The government official noted that the figure was considerably higher than in the 2021 runoff election, when 220,000 votes were cast abroad.
Following the meeting, EU Deputy Chief Observer Alexander Gray and official Angeles Mohedu, along with OAS representatives Gerardo Sanchez and Maria Silva, assessed the electoral process abroad.
They agreed that the Foreign Affairs Ministry had strictly complied with the scheduled deadlines, as well as carried out both election day operations and the return of electoral materials without setbacks.
The observation missions, which monitored the process nationwide and at four consulates abroad, highlighted the efficiency of the transfer of ballot papers and vote count records to the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) headquarters in Lima.
This logistical operation was completed in record time between June 8 and June 10.
"In coordination with the electoral authorities and consular offices, we carried out the chain of custody, a protocol established to ensure the security, integrity, and authenticity of vote count records and ballot papers," Pareja pointed out.
Electoral materials protected
The minister also stated that all electoral materials were properly safeguarded from the close of the vote count by polling table members themselves, who were responsible for sealing the envelopes.
The career diplomat noted that this procedure prevents any opening or tampering from taking place without being detected.
For this reason, he expressed his appreciation for the civic commitment of Peruvians living abroad who served as polling table members, as well as consular officials and hundreds of volunteers who helped facilitate the democratic process.
Finally, the minister welcomed the public commitment made by both presidential candidates and their technical teams to calmly await the official vote count by the competent electoral authorities and accept the final results.
"I urge them to continue demonstrating that democratic spirit, and I extend that appeal to their spokespersons, who in both cases possess considerable moral credibility," he concluded.
