Tariffs: Peru in talks with U.S. to mitigate impact of trade measures

10:53 | Lima, Apr. 9.

Peru's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) said Thursday it remains in dialogue with the United States following a new presidential proclamation issued by the U.S. government that introduces changes to tariff treatment applicable to various manufactured goods composed of copper, steel, and aluminum.

"Peru remains in constant dialogue with U.S. authorities to explore areas of cooperation that may help mitigate the impact of the trade measures," the ministry indicated.

"The Peruvian government is evaluating the measures, within the framework of its international commitments, to assess potential implications for bilateral trade and the competitiveness of its export offering," it added.

Mincetur reported that it is carrying out ongoing technical follow-up of judicial, administrative, and legislative decisions that may be adopted in the United States in order to monitor their evolution.

"It is strengthening the trade promotion and market diversification strategy through an active trade negotiations agenda, participation in trade fairs, business missions and business rounds aimed at expanding the presence of Peruvian products, particularly in higher value-added segments," the government agency explained.

"The Government of Peru reaffirms its commitment to continue strengthening foreign trade as a key driver of the country's economic growth, promoting conditions that improve competitiveness, job creation, and Peru's integration into international markets," it concluded.
