Foreign Affairs Minister Hugo de Zela on Friday called on eligible Peruvian citizens residing overseas to vote in the 2026 General Elections on April 12, noting that fulfilling this civic duty can make a difference.

The government official recalled that the runoff in the previous presidential election (2021) was decided by a very narrow margin of votes between the two candidates who had advanced to said stage.

"The number of Peruvians residing abroad is far greater than that margin. Therefore, I would ask compatriots to be aware that our country's future depends on them as well, and hope they heed this call and go to the polls," he told RPP Noticias.

As is known, more than one million compatriots are listed on the electoral roll for the Peruvians abroad constituency.

Similarly, the minister underscored that his sector will focus on two key actions in the run-up to the elections, the first of which is to provide all possible support so that fellow citizens face no obstacles in going to the polls.

"And second, we want to be guarantors of the vote, in the sense that consular officials in the United States and in every country will travel to Peru, personally carrying ballot boxes with the votes and the corresponding records under proper custody," he added.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet member was asked about campaign-related activities carried out by former Prime Minister Betssy Chavez from Mexico's Embassy in Lima, in support of her mother's campaign for the Senate under Podemos Peru party.

Regarding the matter, the high-ranking official said he learned of the situation while traveling in the United States.

The minister added that, upon returning to Peru, he will review what occurred in order to take the appropriate actions.

In that regard, he did not rule out issuing a note of protest to Mexico over the matter.
