Peru: Oral trial against Pedro Castillo to start on March 4

The Judiciary on Monday announced that the oral trial against former President Pedro Castillo for the alleged crimes of rebellion and abuse of authority will begin on March 4 at 9:00 a.m. (local time).

The Special Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court issued the resolution, also summoning former Prime Ministers Betssy Chavez and Anibal Torres to trial as co-authors of the alleged crime of rebellion.

The trial will furthermore include former ministers Willy Huerta, Roberto Sanchez, and three other defendants.

The Public Ministry (Prosecutor's Officehas requested a 34-year prison sentence for the former top official and a civil reparation of S/65,419 (about US$13,875) in favor of the Peruvian State, the Judiciary specified.

"The hearing will be held in a hybrid format (in-person and virtual) at the Barbadillo Prison," the Judiciary stated on X.


Last November, the Judiciary ordered the start of the oral trial against former President Pedro Castillo for the alleged crime of rebellion to the detriment of the Peruvian State.

The case pertains to the attempted disruption of constitutional order on December 7, 2022, when Castillo announced the dissolution of Congress and the reorganization of the Judiciary, the Public Ministry, and other institutions.
