Peru President: The country demands CNM members' cessation

President Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday affirmed Peruvians demand the cessation of National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) members and urged Congress to make a wise decision on Friday.

As is known, both the CNM and Judicial Power have been recently involved in corruption acts.

Thus, the President on Tuesday called for a Parliament extraordinary session to debate and adopt an agreement on the removal of all CNM members, in accordance with article 157 of the Constitution.

Speaking at a press conference, the Head of State said he is aware of the CNM members' resignation offers, which will facilitate lawmakers' decision-making at the coming Congress extraordinary session.

"The country demands the removal and cessation of the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM), that we —as the Government— formally ask, but that is now in the hands of Parliament for it to take a wise decision this Friday," he affirmed.

Also on Friday, the Congress Justice Commission is expected to present a report on the constitutional complaint against CNM members and a supreme judge.

As is known, all National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) members relinquished their posts on Wednesday morning, saying they "did not commit any irregular act."

On the other hand, the statesman said the board's problem at the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) —whose head, Adolfo Castillo Meza, is being prosecuted for irregular acts— shall be resolved after the CNM institutional issue is settled.

"We believe the (regional and municipal) electoral process (scheduled for October 7) will not experience any complications once these issues are solved," he assured.

The Peruvian leader disclosed the new justice minister to replace Salvador Heresi will be sworn in this week.
