INEI: Peruvian population totals 31,237,385

The current Peruvian population residing in the Inca country amounts to 31,237,385, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed Monday, based on recently-released results of the 2017 census.

In a press conference, INEI head Francisco Costa explained the figure shows the number of people who were counted (29,381,884) and those absent from the count.

Costa warned the Peruvian population is expanding more slowly than before as it grew by only 1% —on an annual basis— in the last inter-census period, which confirms the downward trend.

Women and men

According to the 2017 survey, women account for 50.8% of the total, while men comprise 49.2%. "There are 480,370 more women than men," he pointed out.

The number of men surpasses that of women in only eight regions of Peru: Madre de Dios, San Martin, Tumbes, Ucayali, Pasco, Amazonas, Loreto, and Lima.

On the other hand, the coast is the most populated geographical region in the country, with 58% of inhabitants, followed by the highlands (28.1%), and the rainforest (13.9%).

As for Lima —which makes up nearly 9.5 million of the Andean nation's population— San Juan de Lurigancho remains the most populous district, followed by San Martin de Porres, Ate, and Comas.
