Peru: Ex-President Toledo extradition file translated, to be sent to U.S.

Peruvian Prosecutor's Office on Tuesday reported that the ex-President Alejandro Toledo extradition file has been translated into English and will be submitted to the United States in the coming days.

This morning, the International Legal Cooperation and Extraditions Unit at the Prosecutor's Office received the translation of the document into English.

The file (6 volumes, 3,117 pages front and back) was carefully and thoroughly reviewed and will be submitted to U.S. authorities within the next few days for the respective evaluation and pronouncement.

According to Peru's Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio, the file will be sent expeditiously to the North American country to take its course.

Toledo is accused of allegedly having received US$20 million in bribes from the Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht to secure the Inter-Oceanic Highway contract, a major infrastructure venture connecting Peru and Brazil.

It must be noted this transaction was made when he was President of Peru (2001-2006).

In this sense, the former leader is indicted on charges of collusion, money laundering, and influence peddling.

As a result, Peruvian authorities ordered his preventive detention last year and issued an international arrest warrant for extradition purposes. He is believed to be in the United States.

The ex-Peruvian President denies said charges and claims to be a victim of political persecution.
