Peru: Ex-President Toledo not to be removed from Inter-Oceanic collusion case

01:03 | Lima, May. 11.

Peru's Judiciary will not remove former President Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006) from the collusion investigation on him for allegedly having received bribes from Brazilian companies to secure the Inter-Oceanic Highway contract under his administration.

This was stipulated by the Second Appeals Chamber of the National Criminal Court as it dismissed the appeal brought by Toledo's defense and confirmed the ruling issued on February 6, which declared unfounded the inadmissibility exception for this case.

The information was provided by the Judicial Branch via Twitter.

The resolution —which dismissed Toledo's request at first instance— was issued by the First Preparatory Investigation Court presided over by judge Richard Concepcion Carhuancho.

As is known, Toledo is accused of receiving US$20 million in bribes from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht to secure the Inter-Oceanic Highway contract, a major infrastructure venture connecting Peru and Brazil.

As a result, Peruvian authorities ordered his preventive detention last year and issued an international arrest warrant for extradition purposes. He is believed to be in the United States.
