Peru: Cuban doctors strengthen care at COVID-19 Emergency Hospital in Ayacucho

The arrival of 16 Cuban experts in Ayacucho region has strengthened the medical care at COVID-19 Emergency Hospital, set in the old Regional Hospital, located in Huamanga Province, which received the first two COVID-19 patients on Monday.

"The COVID-19 Emergency Hospital started operations gradually and Ayacucho's brave health workers as well as Cuban experts, who have already gone through the first exploratory procedures in said hospital, unite to tackle the pandemic," Ayacucho Governor Carlos Rua told Andina news agency.

The Cuban mission —made up of 9 doctors and 7 nurses specialized in epidemiology, as well as intensivists, internists, pneumologists, and anesthetists, among others— came to Ayacucho thanks to the regional authority's efforts undertaken since the beginning of the health emergency.

Governor Rua presented the first document to Cuban Ambassador to Peru Sergio Gonzalez on March 20, with the aim of ensuring the presence of Cuban experts in the region's main strategic facilities, which was also sent to the Presidency of the Republic, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The brigades of Cuban specialists —with great experience in the field of medicine— will work in the Valley of Apurimac, Ene, and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM), in southern and central Ayacucho, as well as in Huamanga.

Their presence in the region will strengthen epidemiological, pharmacological surveillance, as well as protect the population from infection and spread of the virus.
