Peruvian alpaca fiber exports reached US$68.3 million between January and November 2017, up by 110% over the same period in 2016, Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur) informed.
Said increase was mainly explained by higher volume (84%) and average prices (14%) of said exported products.
Likewise, Mincetur stressed
alpaca fiber shipments rose 246% last November, thus totaling US$7 million.
This positive result was driven by greater exports to China (390%) and Italy (86%), as well as increased shipments from Inca Tops and Texao Lanas companies.
In the analyzed period, the value of
alpaca fiber exports to China grew 217%, climbing from US$15.1 million (2016) to US$48 million (2017).
Likewise, shipments to Italy totaled US$15 million, a 43% rise from the same term in 2016 (US$10.5 million).
Peru, world's largest alpaca fiber exporter
Peru is the world's
main alpaca fiber exporter and producer by accounting for 90% of total shipments and 80% of the whole output, respectively.
In this regard, Arequipa region is the top exporting area, as its shipments account for 99% of the country's total alpaca fiber sales.
The Inca country's annual production stands at 4,500 tons, more than 60% of which are intended for the international market.
