Odebrecht delegation in Peru negotiates deal on Lava Jato case

A delegation from Brazilian corruption-tainted construction firm Odebrecht currently pays a visit to Peru in order to negotiate an agreement with the State Attorney's Office, Senior Prosecutor Rafael Vela said.

"I must inform that, even at this moment, an Odebrecht delegation has come to sign agreements at a meeting including conversations and negotiations with Attorney Jorge Ramirez," he pointed out.

It must be noted Ramirez is Peru's ad hoc attorney to the Odebrecht graft case.

According to the prosecutor, these negotiations seek a solution to Odebrecht's requirements that complements what Peru justice demands as civil compensation.

Likewise, he remarked the Special Group of Prosecutors investigating the Lava Jato case —which is under his leadership— maintains "continuous cooperation" with Ramirez to make sure objectives are contributory.

"(…) We are jointly working with the State Attorney's Office, and we understand this joint effort will determine the fulfillment of obligations, but also the solution to requirements of an effective patrimonial compensation," he added.

As is known, the Brazilian construction giant admitted to having paid millions in bribes to government officials in Peru, in order to secure public-works contracts.

As a result, Odebrecht benefited from over US$143 million between 2005 and 2014 in Peru, according to the U.S. Justice Department.

The period in question spans over three previous presidencies: Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), Alan Garcia (2006-2011) and Ollanta Humala (2011-2016).

Last May, the Government called on U.S. authorities to approve the extradition of fugitive ex-President Toledo so that he can face Peruvian justice.
