Odebrecht banned from signing contracts with Peru State

Brazil's construction company Odebrecht is not allowed to sign any project-contracts with the Peruvian State, following revelations that clearly linked the conglomerate with corruption acts, Peru's Prime Minister Fernando Zavala confirmed on Sunday night.

"We are not going to sign any project-contracts with companies sanctioned for corruption acts, or those which have admitted participation in such practices," he told Cuarto Poder TV show while referring to the enterprise.

As is known, the Brazilian construction giant admitted to having paid bribes worth approximately US$29 million to government officials in Peru, "in order to secure public-works contracts."

As a result, Odebrecht benefited from over US$143 million between 2005 and 2014 in Peru, according to the U.S. Justice Department.

The period in question covers three previous presidencies: Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), Alan Garcia (2006-2011) and Ollanta Humala (2011-2016).

The case is under investigation by the Peruvian Attorney's Office. A special Congress commission will start corresponding probes this week.
