UN to support Peru in strengthening tourism capacity

01:00 | Madrid (Spain), Jan. 21.

UN Tourism will support Peru in strengthening its tourism development through training programs, the exchange of experiences in air connectivity, among other areas, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) announced.

During her visit to Spain to lead the Peruvian delegation participating in the International Tourism Fair (FITUR 2026), Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Teresa Mera met with
UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais.

The meeting aimed to strengthen strategic cooperation between Peru and the world's leading multilateral tourism body.

At this event, the parties agreed to promote a work plan for the development of micro-courses aimed at tourism service providers, particularly micro and small enterprises linked to Mincetur's "Pueblos con Encanto" (Charming Towns) program and UN Tourism's "Best Tourism Villages" initiative.

These training programs, which would have an estimated budget of approximately €15,000, will help strengthen key competencies such as service quality, basic tourism safety, formalization, digital marketing, accessibility, and the circular economy.

In this regard, the minister said that "strengthening local capacities is essential to consolidating a more inclusive, competitive, and sustainable tourism sector, with a direct impact on local communities."

It was also noted that Peru has positioned itself as an actor with growing leadership in the Americas, driven by its active participation at forums promoted by UN Tourism.

In this context, Peru's role as Chair of the Programme and Budget Committee for the 2025–2027 period was highlighted, as well as its recent election as a member of the UN–affiliated Executive Council, representing the Americas for the same period.

These achievements consolidate the South American country's international standing and open up new opportunities to strengthen its visibility and leadership on the global tourism agenda.

As part of the agreements reached, UN Tourism will support Peru in strengthening air connectivity through the exchange of experiences and best practices developed by Guatemala in its process of reactivating air routes and services.

Minister Mera highlighted that this support will be key to "improving the accessibility of our destinations, strengthening regional integration, and boosting the arrival of international visitors."

During the dialogue, the strengthening of the relationship between Peru and UN Tourism was also underscored, reflected in milestones such as the implementation of the STAR tool to measure tourism development at the local level.

These milestones also include Peru's hosting of the 70th UN Tourism Regional Commission for the Americas (70CAM).

Within this framework, the Cabinet member reported that Mincetur is working on the development of a National Framework for the Adoption of Artificial Intelligence in the Tourism Sector, aimed at improving security, trust, and the visitor experience through the responsible use of emerging technologies.

Lastly, the government official reported that Peru has announced its bid to host a meeting of the UN Tourism Executive Council in 2027, an initiative supported by the successful organization of the 70CAM.

"Peru offers a combination of cultural richness and modern infrastructure that positions us as an ideal venue for large-scale meetings," Mera indicated.

"Our experience in organizing international conferences, together with a network of destinations featuring modern convention centers, a wide range of accommodation options, and efficient connectivity, allows us to ensure a seamless and comprehensive experience for participants," she pointed out.
