The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo will visit Mexico and the United States from September 17 to 22 to reaffirm Peru's commitment to the values of democracy and human rights before the international community, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reported.

One of the trip's main objectives will be boosting economic recovery to overcome social exclusion and fight the pandemic within a framework of macroeconomic stability, as well as reducing social gaps, protecting the environment, and fighting corruption.

It must be noted that the Head of State's first trip overseas emphasizes Peru's commitment to multilateralism and the need to strengthen it as a sphere to face transnational challenges concertedly, as is the case of the fight against COVID-19, while placing international attention on social issues, such as universal access to education, health, and food —in line with the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The tour will begin with the participation of the President at the VI Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Mexico on September 18.

This event will be followed by his visit to Washington D.C. (U.S.) to appear on September 20 before the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS), where he will hold a meeting with the Secretary-General of the aforementioned hemispheric organization, Luis Almagro.

Mr. Castillo will also address the General Debate of the 76th General Assembly of the United Nations in New York City, on September 21.

Similarly, the trip will allow the Head of State to hold meetings with counterparts from other States and authorities from various international organizations, which will allow Peru to strengthen the international projection of our national, autonomous, democratic, social, and decentralized foreign policy.

At the same time, it will mean a boost for economic reactivation, through export and investment promotion activities.

Finally, according to the schedule, the President is expected to hold bilateral meetings and other gatherings with counterparts from the Andean Community and the Pacific Alliance, in addition to meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, among other events.
