Peru's tin, iron, and zinc production shows substantial growth in Jan-Apr 2021

16:00 | Lima, Jun. 2.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) has reported that Peru's production of tin, iron, and zinc recorded a growth of 76.2%, 58.4%, and 41.2%, respectively, between January and April 2021, compared to the same period last year.

According to Minem, the mining production recovery, which began in the second half of 2020, is maintained until today, thus reflecting the strength of the industry.

The ministry explains that the positive results as of April are largely due to the reactivation of the mining sector, following the restrictions imposed between March and April 2020, which companies adhered to, thus resulting in lower productivity.

According to figures from Minem's Mining Statistical Bulletin (BEM), the April 2021 tin production figure (2,338 fine metric tons) was higher that of the same month last year, when operations at Minsur —the only producer of said metal— decreased in Puno.

In the case of iron, its production at Chinese mining companies Shougang Hierro Peru and Minera Shouxin Peru —located in Ica region— returned to normal levels.

For its part, the evident year-on-year increase in zinc production is due to the recovery in the levels of production at Nexa Resources Peru (Ica and Pasco) and Catalina Huanca Sociedad Minera (Ayacucho), as well as the resumption of operations at mining companies Antamina (Ancash) and Volcan (Junin and Pasco), among others.

According to the above-mentioned bulletin, between January and April this year, Peru's production of copper, silver, lead, and molybdenum increased 10%, 24.8%, 15%, and 14.8%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2020.
