The Government seeks to avoid an extreme confinement in the face of a new COVID-19 outbreak registered in Peru, the President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti affirmed on Wednesday.

The Head of State noted that the pandemic has affected each region differently. Based on the current indicators, the Government has defined in which areas to establish alerts.

These are moderate, high and, very-high levels, based on the incidence of the disease and the conditions in which medical attention is provided. The measures will vary in accordance with each level, top official said.

If the prevention measures already established are not complied with, the alert level will be extreme, and there will be a deficit in medical care.

"We want to avoid an extreme confinement, a strict quarantine for all. We don't want to get there," Mr. Sagasti expressed.

However, if there are cases of an extreme alert, it will be necessary to impose a confinement, he warned.

Otherwise, there will be massive infections again and difficulties in the public health system to care for those infected.

"We save these types of measures for last because we know that many Peruvians have to earn a living every day," he added.

Constant evaluation

Every 15 days, the measures taken during the pandemic will be reviewed for modification purposes, said Mr. Sagasti, who urged citizens to "do their part" as the Government and the country will not be successful without their collaboration.

The President also indicated that the level of infections has been increasing in recent months.
