President Martin Vizcarra on Sunday greeted nurses across the country on behalf of all Peruvians on the occasion of National Nurses Day.

"I send greetings to all nurses across Peru on their day. My respect, admiration and gratitude for the noble and great work they do for our country," he said.

The Head of State highlighted the crucial role of nurses during the health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Remarks were made after monitoring the functioning of the inpatient unit at the EsSalud Village in Tumbes region.

At the site, he stressed the efforts of the Government, which —through the Ministry of Health (Minsa), the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) and regional governments— has managed to significantly increase the number of hospital beds since the state of emergency was declared.

In this regard, Mr. Vizcarra affirmed that 5 months ago only 2,000 beds were available for COVID-19 patients, but today that number has jumped to 20,000 beds from Tumbes to Tacna.
