Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti attends the swearing-in ceremony of Elvia Barrios as the new head of the Judicial Branch for the period between January 2021 and December 2022.

The event —held at the Justice Palace's Vidaurre Hall— marks the opening of the Judicial Year 2021 in Peru.

Elvia Barrios was elected as the new head of the Judicial Branch on December 3, 2020, thus becoming the first woman to hold this position in the country.

The election was in charge of the Judicial Branch's Plenary Chamber. She received 11 out of 15 votes.

Provisional supreme judges and magistrates at other instances do not participate in person due to restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the ceremony, the outgoing Judiciary Chair Jose Luis Lecaros delivered a speech.
