President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday presided over a ceremony commemorating the 199th anniversary of the Peruvian Navy and the 141st anniversary of the Naval Battle of Angamos.

The event took place at the Naval Academy of Peru located in Callao's Punta district.

Earlier on Thursday, the Presidency of the Republic greeted the Peruvian Navy for its 199th anniversary, recalling the patriotism, heroism, and courage of Rear-Admiral Miguel Grau Seminario, its leading figure.

"He is an example of integrity and commitment to Peru," reads a post on twitter.

Today, October 8, Peru celebrates the 199th anniversary of the Peruvian Navy and the 141st anniversary of the Naval Battle of Angamos.

For this reason, a minute of silence in memory of the so-called "Knight of the Seas" was held at 9:50 a.m., the exact time when he attained immortality on October 8, 1879.
