The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Thursday reported that the Government imposed fines worth S/7.7 million (about US$1.966 million) for the oil spill that occurred in Lima’s Ventanilla Sea last January.

Within this framework, the Head of State indicated that his administration had found the national territory with polluted rivers, a solid waste dump, large deteriorated areas, loss of forests, and faced an oil spill in the sea and in the Amazonia.

"Regarding the oil spill in the Ventanilla Sea caused by Repsol, fines amounting to S/7.7 million have been imposed and eight administrative sanctioning procedures remain in force," he said.

Likewise, the Head of State specified that the Attorney's Office of the Environment Ministry has been promoting proceedings over the crime of environmental pollution against Repsol and those who are found responsible.

The ecological disaster, which occurred on January 15 this year, was caused by the spill of 11,900 barrels of crude oil at La Pampilla maritime terminal, which is operated by the Spanish company Repsol.
