The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Friday stressed that his administration, through the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD) and the National Council for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities (Conadis), has been promoting sport for the benefit of the country's most vulnerable populations.

During the opening of the World Championship Futsal Down Lima 2022, the Head of State warmly welcomed athletes from eight countries to Peru —a nation that has the greatest diversity on the planet and a great variety of ecosystems.

"Our Government, through the IPD and the (National) Council for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities, promotes sport for the most vulnerable populations in the country, such as citizens with disabilities, who have been forgotten and left behind in the past," Mr. Castillo expressed.

In this sense, the top official indicated that there is firm decision to promote futsal at a high competition level, showcasing the abilities of people with Down syndrome and, above all, "to banish myths and prejudices so as to continue building an inclusive, egalitarian, and fair society."

"You are the best example of struggle, perseverance, and improvement; you know very well that there is no victory without sacrifice, and that the game rules and the rival must be respected," Mr. Castillo pointed out.

"a special recognition to the parents and coaches who day by day with their efforts have enabled athletes not only to reach the national team, but also to play in a world tournament," he added.

While addressing the national squad, the President urged them to show the best of their talent and raise the name of Peru high, following the example of the adult national soccer team, whose members recently managed to end fifth at the South American Qualifiers, thus earning the right to play a repechage game for access towards Qatar 2022 World Cup.

"We are proud to be the organizers of the third world championship (World Championship Futsal Down Lima 2022), an event that will enable our young athletes to show the best of their talent, efforts, and skills but, above all, it will be an opportunity for us to jointly tell the world that sport does not have barriers; sport does not exclude, has no borders, sport rather unites us; sport means health and teaches us values such as teamwork, respect, and loyalty," he stated.

The inauguration took place at Lima's National Sports Village (Videna). It was attended by First Lady Lilia Paredes, who swore in the athletes, and Women Minister Diana Miloslavich, among other authorities.

This third edition of the World Championship Futsal Down Lima 2022 will see the participation of Argentina, Chile, Portugal, Turkey, Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay, and Peru.
