Peru's Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Thursday affirmed that no COVID-19 vaccine dose can get lost in the country.

In an interview with Arequipa-based Exitosa radio station, the Cabinet chief said that the cases of lost doses reported in said region are already being investigated by both the Comptroller's Office and the Public Ministry.

"We cannot allow the loss of a single vaccine dose, and the role played by the media and society —to help monitor that vaccines go to those who are aimed at— is fundamental," she expressed.

"The investigations will will lead to those responsible," Bermudez pointed out.

The government official emphasized that 50,000 doses a week are being received in March, while 200,000 vaccines a week will be available starting April, thus making it possible to gradually increase the immunization.

"This will help cover a larger portion of the population and speed up the vaccination process," the Prime Minister remarked.

Stating that the pandemic continues to be a very serious problem, Bermudez noted that it is being approached from three different perspectives: prevention —which is essential to avoid infections— provision of health services, and vaccination.

"At a global level, vaccination is the most effective strategy to combat the pandemic and any disease," she added.
