Health Minister Oscar Ugarte on Friday warned the population about the danger of possible COVID-19 contagion if attending the electoral rallies scheduled in various parts of Peru, ahead of the second round to be held on June 6.

Within this framework, the Minsa head commented that —although there are clear protocols regarding how the electoral processes should develop in the midst of a pandemic— these are not being respected as they should.

"I see that these are not being complied with, necessarily. Here, it is up to the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), which is the governing body, to guide the candidates. We reinforce that," Ugarte expressed.

"People must not be exposed by calling rallies or meetings. There are other ways of spreading ideas, and publicity; we hope that leaders of political parties comply with this," he added.

Thus, the Cabinet member called on citizens "to their civic conscience, not to expose themselves participating in activities of this type."

Remarks were made during the supervision of the vaccination of adults aged above 70 in Lima's San Borja district.
