Economy and Finance Minister Waldo Mendoza on Thursday affirmed that the recently-enacted agrarian promotion law has not satisfied either workers or entrepreneurs, but it can represent the first step towards a more comprehensive solution in the future.

"Workers from the agrarian sector have managed to get an increase in their wages, maybe not as much as they were hoping for, but this can be the first step towards a more direct and comprehensive discussion on the agrarian issue that this government and the next ones will have to solve," he expressed.

"This is an imperfect law, since no one is completely satisfied with it," he noted.

However, the minister stressed that Congress' efforts —in coordination with the Executive Branch— have enabled a short-term solution to the problem that will need to be complemented with long-term ones.

"Workers have obtained a 30% raise, that is S/279 (about US$77) per month; it may seem insignificant, but a 10%, 15%, or 20% increase in wages is obtained between 10 and 15 years. Thus, a sudden improvement of this magnitude is important," Mendoza added.

Temporary waivers

Furthermore, the minister said the law also considers that waivers should be temporary, and it allows them to be gradual.

Remarks were made following a Council of Ministers session.
