Peru's election board chairman calls for high-end debate full of ideas

12:56 | Lima, May. 30.

National Elections Board (JNE) Chairman Jorge Luis Salas has called for a high-end debate of the candidates running for the Presidency of the Republic, one that is full of ideas and values, so that citizens can make a clear and informed choice at the runoff election on June 6.

Salas revealed that he is looking forward to a reasonable and polite exchange of views to help voters decide between Keiko Fujimori (Fuerza Popular) and Pedro Castillo (Peru Libre).

"I am sure that the people of Arequipa will continue to uphold civility and will stay away from demonstrations of any kind, against or in favor, because a curfew is in place," he said in remarks to RPP radio and TV station.

In addition, he is convinced that "they will listen to what candidates have to say to cast a conscious and reasoned vote in due time, because the future of Peru is at stake."

Salas explained that electoral results depend on the voting at the polling stations and on the role played by polling station members, who act as electoral judges to decide the validity of votes.

He noted that electoral system bodies such as the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec), and the National Elections Board (JNE) are ready and that election observers will participate in the monitoring process.

In this regard, he lamented that members of the JNE, especially the chairman, have been questioned about their actions.
