The Chief of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, Manuel Gomez de la Torre, on Saturday reported that Peru is gradually regaining normality —following the violent acts that have occurred in various parts of the country over recent days.

In his speech during a press conference held at the Government Palace, the high-ranking officer argued that Armed Forces and National Police members have suffered attacks by people who are completely wrong in their claim. Nonetheless, "we have remained firm."

"We have been gradually regaining normality on roads, at airports, and cities. We are returning to normality, that has not yet been fully achieved. However, we must be positive," he expressed.

The Army general stressed that the mission of law enforcement agencies during the state of national emergency decreed by the Government has been to safeguard critical assets attacked by groups that are committing "terrorist actions."

"The premises of the Prosecutor's Office and the Judiciary shall not be destroyed. Capacity at airports shall not be limited. How are citizens going to travel? The communication channels must remain free. Given the illegal misuse of violence, the (Peruvian) State provides that the Armed Forces and the Police, as appropriate, go out to protect Peru," Gomez de la Torre underscored.

He also welcomed the initiative from thousands of citizens who, faced with acts of violence, have begun to march peacefully wearing white t-shirts to demand peace and an end to violence in the country.
