Peru's 2026 Elections: ONPE estimates presidential results would be ready Friday

15:17 | Lima, Apr. 22.

Interim National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) Chief Bernardo Pachas estimated on Wednesday that the processing of electoral records from the 2026 presidential election would be completed this Friday.

In that regard, the official said appropriate measures will be taken to restore citizens’ sense of security.

"We have a probable date to close the presidential results this Friday with the processed records. Then comes the work of the Special Electoral Boards (JEE), and, if there are challenges or appeals, the National Elections Board (JNE)," he indicated.

The interim chief stated that 50,983 challenged electoral records were sent to the JEE, of which 5,664 correspond to the presidential election, 12,903 to the single-district Senate race, 9,539 to the multi-district Senate race, 11,902 to the Chamber of Deputies race, and 10,975 to the Andean Parliament.

At a press conference, he said all necessary corrective measures will be taken regarding operational actions and the people involved in the electoral process, with the aim of providing better electoral service ahead of the second presidential election.

Pachas added that ONPE will request oversight from the Comptroller's Office in all selection processes, as well as in the procurement of services and goods, so that everything is transparent.

"Ahead of the runoff, we need to guarantee the installation of polling tables at voting places in order to deliver all materials on time. In that regard, we need the support from the Education Ministry and private entities that always cooperate with us," he said.

Pachas also asked ONPE workers and all Decentralized Electoral Process Offices (ODPE) to review, analyze, and enhance all procedures and activities in order to provide an electoral service that restores calm and security to all citizens and electoral stakeholders.

Regarding logistical problems in the electoral material distribution on April 12, the interim chief said they are being investigated administratively by ONPE and by the Public Ministry (Prosecutor's Office).

He announced they will cooperate with those actions.

Finally, Pachas said the electoral schedule approved by the National Elections Board (JNE) establishes that the runoff will be held on June 7.

He added that work is underway with the body to close all challenged electoral records, especially in the presidential election, in order to determine the candidates who will advance to the runoff.
