Peruvian Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Juan Carlos Mathews on Monday reported that travel projections for the long weekend National Holidays were exceeded.

The government official explained that more than 1.4 million people traveled on these days, and about US$180 million in sales were generated on this occasion.

"This weekend has been positive for tourism. The results are interesting because they reflect an increase in confidence among tourists. The key is to keep pushing the flow forward," he told RPP Noticias.

Incoming tourism

Regarding incoming tourism, Mathews explained that promotional efforts abroad are intended to offer a sense of calm, safety, and control in the development of tourism.

"This will contribute to the recovery of incoming tourism," he remarked.

The Cabinet member referred to the campaigns to promote destinations, noting that this long weekend (to mark Peru's Independence Day) stood out for the variety of promotions and prices. In this case, more than 300 tour operators participated.

"This weekend’s result is due to effort of the public sector, in cooperation with the private sector," he commented.

According to Mathews, this joint work will continue, which is why incoming tourism is projected to grow 10.5% by the end of this year.
