The European Union (EU) plans to sign an agreement with the Government of Peru for it to participate in Europe's peacekeeping and crisis management missions.

EU Ambassador to Peru Gaspar Frontini reported that it is a document which has been negotiated for several years, adding that it is now nearing completion.

"We hope to be able to sign it promptly," he told Andina news agency.

According to the diplomat, Peru's experience in peacekeeping missions with the United Nations has been taken into consideration the most for this step.

Similarly, there is the fact that Peru is and has been, in many spheres, a partner and ally of the EU for multilateral affairs, he said.

For example, the envoy referred to the 2030 Agenda, the defense of multilateralism, and the situation between Russia and Ukraine.

"Peru has earned a position due to respect for international law, non-aggression, and the integrity of the countries' territories, just as the European Union did," he recalled.

Moreover, Ambassador Frontini announced that another agreement is about to be signed with Peru so as to strengthen dialogue mechanisms with the EU.
