Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Juan Carlos Mathews on Thursday projected that 3.2 million foreign tourists will arrive in Peru this year.

"There is an expectation for inbound tourism that it could reach 3.2 million visitors from abroad this year, considering that, according to preliminary figures, Peru would have reached close to 2.5 million (visits) by the end of 2023," he told Andina news agency.

"Regarding domestic tourism, around 37 million trips would have been reached in 2023, and we are thinking of exceeding 40 million this year," he added.

Minister Mathews indicated that these are conservative projections, because 2024 has just started. Yet a promotional campaign will be launched to continue supporting Peru as an international tourist destination.

"The promotional campaign will be carried out at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur), which is the most important event for the sector abroad," he said.

The upcoming event will take place in Madrid, Spain, from January 24 to 28.
