Peru: Inbound tourism to grow 10% in 2019

18:38 | Lima, Feb. 6.

Around 4.8 million foreign tourists are expected to visit Peru this year, up nearly 10% compared to 2018, Scotiabank informed Wednesday.

According to the bank's latest weekly report, this growth will be underpinned by the hosting of sporting events such as the 2019 Dakar Rally, the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games, as well as the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Growth will also be fueled by increased intra-regional tourism in Latin America, which is boosted by more competitive airline ticket prices.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, the 2019 Dakar Rally generated an economic impact of over US$60 million for the five host regions (Lima, Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua, and Tacna) and the Peru Brand's exposure valued at US$200 million.

On the other hand, the Pan American and Parapan American Games —taking place between July and August of this year— is projected to attract nearly 75,000 visitors.

Furthermore, Scotiabank estimated around 4.4 million tourists visited the Inca country last year, an 8% rise compared to 2017.
