Development and Social Inclusion Minister Julio Demartini announced at the United Nations headquarters that his sector plans to generate 55,000 temporary jobs in Peru so as to contribute to the economic and social inclusion of vulnerable people.

In his speech at the 61st Session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD61) of the United Nations (UN) —which is taking place in New York— the Midis head reported that his sector projects a productive social employment program for maintenance works in rural areas this quarter.

These works will generate 50,000 unskilled labor jobs for a period of six months. Similarly, Midis proposes a Social Investment Program that will generate more than 5,000 jobs in urban and rural areas, for the construction of social infrastructure.

The Cabinet member referred to bridges, sidewalks, educational institutions, cradles, river defenses, sanitation, health posts, and water systems maintenance during a period of 11 months.

Both initiatives are being run by the Cooperation Fund for Social Development (Foncodes).

2030 Agenda

Minister Demartini remarked that Midis is working on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in order to meet its objectives of achieving the well-being of all Peruvians, leaving no one behind.

The minister's speech focused on the priority theme of the 61st CsocD, which is the following:

"Creating full and productive employment and decent work for all as a way of overcoming inequalities to accelerate the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development."

For this purpose, the Cabinet member stressed that the Foncodes program, through its Haku Wiñay/Noa Jayatai project, develops productive capacities in families from rural Andean and Amazonian communities to increase and diversify their autonomous income.

In this context, 359,842 households have benefited from 2012 to December 2022. For 2023, it is predicted that more than 65,000 rural households will be benefited.

The government official also mentioned that Foncodes has a new plan of intervention in urban areas called: Mi Emprendimiento Mujer (My Entrepreneurship Women), which seeks to improve the economic situation of 800 women associated with Comedores Populares (community kitchens) and Ollas Comunes (soup kitchens), through the development of their technical-productive capacities and the endowment of assets, which allow them to develop sustainable enterprises.

This intervention is planned to be expanded in order to serve 1,000 additional women, who have been supporting the food attention to the most vulnerable population in solidarity.
