Peru on Thursday participated in the Urgent Debate convened at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva to address the human rights situation in Ukraine stemming from the Russian aggression, thus confirming its firm condemnation of the military offensive and demanding an immediate cessation of hostilities.

According to a release by the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the delegation reaffirmed Peru's deep concern about the impact of the conflict on the civilian population and the deterioration of the humanitarian situation.

It lamented the tragic loss of lives, especially of children, and expressed solidarity with the more 500,000 people who have been forced to flee their homes.

The delegation stated that Peru demands strict respect for international humanitarian law and human rights law, adding that the necessary measures must be taken to protect the civilian population and that access to humanitarian aid must be guaranteed to the neediest population.

Peru supports the draft resolution that seeks to condemn the violations of human rights and international humanitarian law resulting from the Russian aggression against Ukraine. It would be adopted at the conclusion of the Urgent Debate of the Human Rights Council this Friday.
