Peru's agro-exports were mainly driven by sales of avocados
—the sector's leading product— which amounted to US$754 million between January and September this year, Peruvian Foreign Trade Society (Comex-Peru) has reported.
According to the association, this amount represents a 0.5%. increase as compared with the corresponding one from a year earlier.
The value of shipments accounted for about 17% of Peru's total agro-exports in January-September.
The main destinations for Peruvian avocados were the Netherlands (US$251 million), Spain (US$164 million), the United Kingdom (US$62 million), and Russia (US$19 million).
Furthermore, important shipments were sent to China (US$25 million) and Japan (US$21 million).
In terms of volume, the sector exported 405,252 tons of avocado during the period of analysis, 30.9% more than in the same period last year.
This important rise, however, was not reflected in a sharp increase in the value of avocado exports
, due to the decline in the price of such product.
"The lower export price may be explained by the oversupply in international markets," Comex Peru added.
