Peru: Alejandro Soto elected Congress' new Chairman for 2023-2024

Parliamentarian Alejandro Soto (Alliance for Progress) was elected as the new Chairman of Congress of the Republic for the 2023-2024 annual session period.

Soto is joined by First Vice-Chairman, Hernando Guerra-Garcia (Popular Force); Second Vice-Chairman, Waldemar Cerron (Free Peru); and Third Vice-Chairwoman, Rosselli Amuruz (Go on Country).

The APP legislator led List No. 1 which won the first round with 77 votes.

Soto's group prevailed over List No. 2., which had nominated Luis Aragon (Popular Action) for the chairmanship of Parliament. Said list received 39 votes.

In addition, 4 blank votes and 8 null ones were counted on the occasion.

Aragon had been joined by Edgar Reymundo (Democratic Change-Together for Peru), Paul Gutierrez (Teachers' Bloc), and Elias Varas (Bicentennial Peru) as candidates for first, second, and third vice-chairs, respectively.

Once the vote counting was over, the new Board members were sworn in as new heads of Parliament.
