INEI to conduct global survey of Peruvian community abroad

20:57 | Lima, Oct. 19.

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) will conduct the Second Global Survey of the Peruvian Community Abroad to get updated information on the main demographic, social, and economic characteristics, as well as vulnerability, immigration status, and connection with Peru, of Peruvians residing abroad.

The survey —to be conducted between November 2021 and January 2022— will emphasize the COVID-19 pandemic context and will serve as a tool for decision-making by public and private institutions.

The INEI said that the launch of this survey takes place as part of the activities marking the "Day of Peruvians Living Abroad," which is commemorated every year on October 18.

The information obtained from said statistical study will contribute to the formulation and evaluation of public policies on migration.

In addition, said data will help INEI assess trends and characteristics of Peruvians residing abroad, including information disaggregated by demographic, social, and economic factors.

According to the statistics institute, 3,241,992 Peruvians were living abroad as of 2019, accounting for 10.1% of the total population (32,131,400 inhabitants).

Out of the total number of Peruvian nationals living abroad, 30.3% resided in the United States, 15.1% in Spain, 13.9% in Argentina, 11.8% in Chile, and 10.1% in Italy; and together made up 81% of the Peruvian population living overseas.

The survey will be available online through a virtual form in every country where Peruvian expatriates reside. In addition, printed forms will be available at Peruvian Consulates too.

It should be pointed out that the scope of the study will be people aged 18 years and above living outside Peru.
