Health Min: Vaccinated citizens will not become severe cases, but they can infect others

A citizen who is vaccinated will be protected from COVID-19. However, that person will still be able to carry the virus and infect others who have not received the antidote, Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti warned on Thursday.

"The vaccine protects me, but other people, who are in physical contact with me, can come into contact with the virus and become ill. There will always be vulnerable people who have not been vaccinated; that is why the call is for all of us to continue protecting ourselves following the vaccination," she expressed.

After indicating that the vaccine will contribute to mitigating the disease and avoiding serious cases, Dr. Mazzetti reiterated the need to continue complying with biosafety measures, such as using a face mask, maintaining physical distance, and washing hands with soap and water.

Arrival of Sinopharm vaccines

Moreover, the Health minister said that China's Sinopharm laboratory has not yet informed the Peruvian Government about the exact arrival date of COVID-19 vaccines.

The Cabinet member merely indicated that —in the purchase contract for the first one million doses— only the month of January was set.

"(…) Once we receive the document informing us of the exact date, you will be informed in a timely manner," she said in this sense.

Moreover, the Minsa head explained that the contract for the purchase of vaccines from Sinopharm includes a clause linked to trade secret that prevents the Peruvian Government from disclosing the vaccine price unless the company authorizes it.

On the occasion, Dr. Mazzetti also urged the population to take the second COVID-19 wave seriously.
