The Presidency of the Republic has called Complementary Municipal Elections for May 26, 2024, with the aim of electing mayors and councilors in the districts of Pion (province of Chota) and Ninabamba (province of Santa Cruz), both located in the region of Cajamarca, for the 2023-2026 period

Such elections will be held in above-mentioned jurisdictions because said objective was not achieved during the Complementary Municipal Elections held on October 2 last year and in the Complementary Municipal Elections held on July 2 this year.

Last year's elections were declared null in 12 districts, including the districts of Pion and Ninabamba, which is why complementary municipal elections were called for this year.

However, such elections were declared officially null for different reasons.

In Pion, municipal elections were annulled because more than a half of voters were absent from the polling stations, which is one of the causes of annulment provided by Article 36 of Municipal Election Law.

In the case of Ninabamba, no candidate registration application was submitted, which prevented the election of municipal authorities in the aforementioned district for the 2023-2026 period.

Electoral schedule

Following the call of the Executive Branch and within the framework of its powers and responsibilities, the National Elections Board (JNE) approved the electoral schedule for the 2024 Complementary Municipal Elections process.

Thus, August 25, 2023, was set as the closing date of the electoral register for the 2024 Complementary Municipal Elections process.

It was also established that the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec) must send the Initial Electoral Register on September 4, 2023.
