Peru's Foreign Affairs Minister Hugo de Zela on Thursday held a meeting in Washington, D.C., with Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, reaffirming the Peruvian government's commitment to the swift and full restoration of democracy in Venezuela.

In a social media post featuring photographs showing De Zela and Machado embracing and speaking, Peru's Foreign Affairs Ministry said the diplomat advocated, alongside the opposition leader, for the "return to constitutional order and the defense and promotion of human rights" in Venezuela.

De Zela traveled to Washington, D.C., this week to take part in the Critical Minerals Ministerial organized by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

There, the Peruvian government official also took the opportunity to hold bilateral meetings. His counterparts included Pablo Quirno (Argentina), Gabriela Sommerfeld (Ecuador), Roberto Alvarez Gil (Dominican Republic), Subrahmanyam Jaishankar (India), and Anita Anand (Canada).

The Peruvian government has, alongside other South American countries, advocated for the proclamation of Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as Venezuela's Head of State after the capture of Nicolas Maduro by the United States in the military operation on January 3.
