Peru: Verdict reading for Toledo in Ecoteva case scheduled for Sept. 3

09:01 | Lima, Aug. 28.

The Ninth Liquidating Criminal Court of Lima has scheduled the verdict reading for former President Alejandro Toledo and other defendants for Wednesday, September 3.

The oral trial hearing will begin at 2:15 p.m. (local time), the Judiciary announced on the X platform.

The verdict reading follows the trial of the former president for the
alleged commission of money laundering in the Ecoteva case.

Said decision was announced by Debates Director, Superior Judge Josefa Izaga, following the conclusion of the final defense arguments of former presidential security chief, Avraham Dan On.

It also requested that they pay S/38.22 million (US$10.82 million) in joint civil reparations and that their accounts be seized both nationally and internationally.

Ecoteva case

The Ecoteva case came to light after the discovery of properties purchased for associates of Toledo and large bank deposits made in Costa Rica to a company of the same name, which was registered under the name of Eva Fernenbug, the former president's mother-in-law.

The late businessman Josef Maiman, once implicated in these judicial proceedings, confirmed through a plea bargain that the deposited money stemmed from bribes paid to Toledo while he was President.

Maiman added that the funds had not originated from a pension Fernenbug received as a Holocaust survivor, as initially claimed by the former top official.

Verdict

This would be the second sentence for the former president.

The sentence for the former president is counted from April 23, 2023, the date he was extradited from the United States to Peru. Thus, it will conclude on October 22, 2043.

He is serving his sentence at Barbadillo Prison in Lima's Ate district.

Alejandro Toledo was President of the Republic from 2001 to 2006.
